Dar Es Salaam is a big bustling port city located in Tanzania s central coast. Capital in all but name, (this honour belongs to Dodoma ), as the political and economic heart of the country, Dar Es Salaam is Tanzania s largest and most important city. The Haven of Peace first grew famous during the mid-19th century when the Sultan of Zanzibar recognised its potential as a safe port and turned this once humble fishing village into a thriving trading centre. Today, the city is a fascinating mix of African and Western styles with dusty street markets contrasting sharply with the tree-lined boulevards of the government business district.
