Evening tour in the Santa Cruz area

Like the rest of the city, Santa Cruz, which means Holy Cross, has had its ups and downs. Following the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, the district entered a period of declines, which allowed it to preserve much of its medieval layout and architecture. As a result, it is a warren of whitewashed lanes, alleys, archways and patios, meaning Santa Cruz is redolent of old Seville.

As the tour winds itself from the Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes, site of the Giralda, to the Patio de las Banderas – which has gorgeous views of the belfry – listen to verses from poets such as Becquer, Machado and Aleixandre. Continue on to some of the most popular squares in the quarter, Plaza de los Venerables, Plaza de Santa Cruz, Plaza de Doña Elvira, and walk in the shadow of the old walls.
